October at Kolm Kontrast: From Live Music to Halloween After Hours

October is a big month at Kolm Kontrast. As the weather cools down across Vancouver, the sauna, cold plunge and social space at Kolm are heating up with a full schedule of events throughout the month.

Live Music with Tim Claridge — October 1

The October lineup begins with live music. Every Thursday afternoon, from 3 to 5pm, Kolm will feature live acoustic performances alongside its sauna and cold-plunge experience.

The month begins with folk artist Tim Claridge on October 1, bringing live music into the sauna and cold-plunge experience.

Cinematic Aufguss: Interstellar — October 3

On Saturday afternoons, Kolm is also bringing back its Cinematic Aufguss series. The themed sauna shows take inspiration from some well-known films and television favourites.

October 3 is dedicated to Interstellar, combining music, lighting, steam and performance to create a more theatrical sauna experience.

Live Music with Kay Brette — October 8

The Thursday live music series continues on October 8 with indie-folk artist Kay Brette.

Guests can enjoy the live acoustic performance from 3 to 5pm alongside their sauna and cold-plunge experience. It’s a relaxed way to spend an afternoon while enjoying something a little different from a standard sauna session.

Live Music with Kurt — October 15

On October 15, violinist Kurt takes over the Thursday afternoon live music session from 3 to 5pm.

The combination of live violin, sauna heat and cold plunges offers another way to experience Kolm while slowing down and enjoying the space.

Singles Social at Kolm Kontrast — October 15

There are several events in October aimed at bringing people together, too.

The Singles Social takes place on October 15, giving guests an opportunity to meet new people in a more relaxed setting than the typical bar or dating event.

Cinematic Aufguss: Game of Thrones — October 17

The Cinematic Aufguss series returns on October 17 with a Game of Thrones-inspired sauna experience.

Music, lighting, steam and performance come together to transform a traditional sauna session into something more immersive and theatrical.

Women’s Self-Love Night — October 19

October 19 features a clothing-optional women’s night focused on self-love and relaxation.

The evening offers a comfortable space to unwind, slow down and enjoy Kolm’s sauna and cold-plunge experience.

Date Night Couple’s Class — October 20

Couples can book the Date Night Couple’s Class on October 20.

The experience includes guided heat and cold sessions as well as co-meditation, creating a different kind of date night centred around connection and shared experiences.

After Hours: Elderbrook x Lane8 — October 22

For those who prefer their sauna sessions with a soundtrack, Kolm’s After Hours events take centre stage later in the month.

October 22 features an Elderbrook x Lane8-themed playlist, bringing electronic music into the sauna, cold-plunge and social experience.

Cinematic Aufguss: Star Wars — October 24

The final Cinematic Aufguss of the month takes place on October 24 with a Star Wars-inspired session.

Guests can expect another combination of themed music, lighting, steam and performance as the October Cinematic Aufguss series comes to an end.

EDM Aufguss Show — October 24

October 24 also features an Aufguss Show with EDM, lighting effects and theatrical elements.

The session brings together traditional Aufguss techniques with a more energetic soundtrack and visual experience.

Resonance Ritual: Sound + Sage — October 26

There’s also a quieter option on October 26 with Resonance Ritual: Sound + Sage.

The guided sound-healing session is centred around reflection and intention, offering a slower and more meditative experience during a busy month of events.

After Hours with DJ TANNIIX — October 30

Halloween weekend begins on October 30, when live house DJ TANNIIX provides the music for a special After Hours session.

Guests can move between the sauna, cold plunge and social spaces while enjoying a live house soundtrack ahead of Halloween night.

Halloween After Hours — October 31

The month concludes on October 31 with Halloween After Hours.

The event gives guests the chance to celebrate Halloween while moving between Kolm’s sauna, cold-plunge and social spaces, wrapping up a month filled with music, performances and community events.

With music, themed experiences, guided sessions and plenty of opportunities to meet people, October gives Kolm Kontrast a distinctly social—and slightly theatrical—feel. For anyone looking to try something beyond a traditional sauna visit this fall, the October calendar offers plenty of options.

There’s a moment before stepping into cold water when you wonder why you booked this in the first place. Then comes the chill, the sharp awareness of your surroundings, and, for some people, an invigorating feeling afterward.

That experience helps explain why cold plunging has become a regular ritual for many. But does doing it on the majority of days offer more benefits?

Cold-water immersion has promising uses, particularly for exercise recovery, while research into broader wellness benefits is still developing. Daily sessions aren’t proven to be better than less frequent ones. The best routine is one that suits your health, goals, and response to the cold.

A Refreshing Break From Your Usual Routine

A cold plunge offers a noticeable change of pace. You leave your phone behind, step away from your responsibilities, and focus on an immediate physical experience.

Some people describe feeling refreshed or more awake afterward. That personal response can be part of the appeal, although it shouldn’t be confused with proof of lasting improvements in concentration or productivity.

Think about what you enjoy most about a session. Is it the sensation afterward, the quiet time, or having somewhere to disconnect? Knowing your reason makes it easier to build a routine you actually want to keep.

Potential Relief From Post-Workout Soreness

Cold-water immersion can help reduce perceived muscle soreness after strenuous exercise. That may be useful after a demanding run, a sports event, or another workout that leaves you feeling particularly sore. Results vary with the activity and the immersion protocol.

However, less soreness doesn’t necessarily mean greater fitness gains. Regular cold plunging immediately after strength training may interfere with muscle-building adaptations. If gaining muscle is your priority, consider the timing with a qualified exercise professional.

A plunge is one possible recovery tool alongside sleep, food, hydration, and appropriate rest.

A Possible Way to Unwind

People often seek out cold plunging because they enjoy how they feel afterward. Research is beginning to explore that experience.

A 2025 systematic review found reduced stress at one measured point, 12 hours after immersion, along with some evidence relating to sleep and quality of life. However, findings were limited and varied between studies. The review didn’t establish a reliable mood improvement or an immediate immune boost.

It’s reasonable to enjoy a plunge as part of your downtime. It’s less reasonable to expect it to cure anxiety, guarantee better sleep, or replace mental health care.

Making Space for Yourself

Sometimes, the practical benefit of a wellness routine is simply having time reserved for it.

Booking a session gives you a reason to stop working and do something you’ve chosen for yourself. You might come alone for a quiet visit or share the experience with a friend.

That doesn’t require a dramatic transformation. An enjoyable routine can be worthwhile because it adds something positive to your week. You can appreciate the experience without measuring every session against a health promise.

Do You Need to Plunge Every Day?

There’s no established ideal schedule that applies to everyone. Studies use different temperatures, durations, and frequencies, making it difficult to identify one best approach.

Start by learning how you respond rather than committing to a daily streak. More intense cold and longer sessions aren’t automatically better.

Follow the facility’s instructions, avoid breath-holding or deliberate hyperventilation, and leave the water if you feel dizzy or unwell. Cold immersion can affect breathing, heart rate, and blood pressure. People with heart conditions, high blood pressure, or circulation problems should seek medical advice before trying it.
